Berry Wins Duel in the Desert Modified Finale
Tom Berry Jr. continued his stellar 2022 season over the weekend with a trip west to the Dirt Track at Las Vegas Motor Speedway for the annual Karl Chevrolet Duel in the Desert.
Pulling double duty on the weekend in the Stock Car and Modified ranks, Tom kicked off the triple header on Thursday evening.
Sixty-two Stock Cars registered for battle and a second-place finish in his heat race lined Berry Jr. up fifth for the feature. He passed two competitors to finish third behind Shelby Williams and Jesse Sobbing with Josh Cain and Cade Richards rounding out the Top 5.
Meanwhile, with 102 Modifieds in the pit area Tom won his heat race to advance to the feature. He started and finished fourth in the main event behind Cody Thompson, Zane DeVilbiss, and Dylan Thornton. His performance in the Modified locked him into Saturday's finale.
Action continued on Friday night with Tom again entering the Stock Car ranks. He advanced from 10th to third in his heat race, which left him short of locking into the main event. However, he won his B-Main to earn the 13th-starting spot for the finale.
The 20-lap prelim feature found him advancing two spots to finish 11th.
The weekend drew to a close on Saturday night with the championship events. Via his performances on the prelim night Tom started seventh in the $5,000-to-win Modified finale.
The 25-lap main event found Tom racing to the lead on 21st circuit, and he paced the closing laps to record the victory. His 25th win of the year came over Cody Laney, Dylan Thornton, Ricky Alvarado, and Eddie Belec.
The Stock Car finale found Tom starting 11th, but he was an early retiree to a 30th-place finish.
